The CARD act of 2009 was historical legislation passed by Congress and signed by the president on May 22, 2009, which went into effect in February 2010. This document describes each of the laws and how they affect you as a consumer.

Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

This Act was enacted in 1978. Its purposes are to eliminate abusive practices in the collection of consumer debts, to promote fair debt collection and to provide consumers with an avenue for disputing and obtaining validation of debt information in order to ensure the information's accuracy.
